When I lived in Latvia, I got a taste for their hot, non-alcoholic drinks with a herbal base. There was always an exciting alternative to the food. In general, Latvians prefer to drink more temperate drinks with their food. And if you look at, for example, Traditional Chinese Medicine, hot drinks are preferable to get the metabolism going. It is preferable for sluggishness and constipation. For my part, I also like to drink hot drinks so that I can warm up my body. All of these reasons mean that at home we like to drink a hot drink or tea with our food.
The hot drinks in Latvia often mix berries, herbs and honey. They are often served in heat-resistant glass, which makes it look so beautiful. The first recipe for hot drink we share is based on ginger, honey and Christmassy spicy herbs. We chose this particular recipe because we think it fits well with Advent and can be enjoyed as an alternative to non-alcoholic mulled wine.
.
Ingredients (about 4 cups):
30 g peeled ginger
1 orange
1 cinnamon stick
1 small piece of nutmeg
about 5 allspice
1.5 liters of water
4 large teaspoons honey
How?
Cut the peel off the well-washed orange, leaving as little of the white on the orange as possible. Cut the peeled ginger into small pieces and place it in a saucepan with the orange peel, add spices, add water and bring to a boil over medium heat, covered. Bring to a boil, then reduce to low heat and simmer for about 30 minutes. Let cool and strain the liquid. Reserve some for decoration. Pour the drink into glasses and stir in honey.
