"Plants nurture, protect and heal us"
- writes Donald R. Yance in his masterpiece "Adaptogens in Medical Herbalism". He goes through the background of the adaptogenic herbs and then describes them in detail.
The term Adaptogenics was coined by Soviet researchers in the 1940s. The most famous herb in this genre is the Asian variety of Ginseng. There were certain problems associated with Ginseng and therefore people began to look at equivalent, local herbs. The choice fell on herbs that had proven to withstand very harsh climatic conditions. Such as Siberian Ginseng/Eleutherococcus and Rhodiola rosea. These were widely used in folk medicine in Siberia and eastern Russia.
If you want to dive deep into adaptogens, this is the book for you. 600 pages thick and quite expensive, but worth every penny.
There is a slightly more accessible book by Agatha Noveille: The Complete Guide to Adaptogens: From Ashwagandha to Rhodiola, Medicinal Herbs That Transform and Heal. We haven't read it ourselves, but we've skimmed through it and it looks promising.
