This is our caffeine-free solution to coffee addiction. Roasted roots of dandelion, burdock and chicory.
How do we prepare our o-coffee?
We use dried roots for our o-coffee. We have either harvested them ourselves or bought them. The best taste is if you use one third dandelion root, one third burdock root and one third chicory root. Roast them in a dry frying pan so that they get a little rich color. Store the roasted roots in a glass jar in a cupboard or other dark place.
We take a teaspoon of roots to a cup of water. Let this simmer for at least 15 minutes in a saucepan with a lid on. This is called a decoction. The longer it simmers and the longer the brew is left to steep, the stronger the decoction you get. It is the active substances in the roots that are extracted. Sometimes I let my decoctions steep overnight.
Pour your o-coffee into a nice coffee mug. Add some kind of good mylk if you want. Ps. it is guaranteed decaffeinated and completely caffeine-free.
It has taken a long time to overcome our coffee addiction. We thought it would be easy to quit coffee, if only we had the will. But it wasn't that easy. It took more than just will. Strategy and alternatives needed to be in place when the coffee craving hits. We have tried several different coffee substitutes and have finally settled on making our own from herbs. Dandelion and chicory have sometimes been called poverty coffee and have often been used when coffee has not been available. Since we love burdock, we add it. And the combination of the three is great! Guaranteed non-addictive.
Quitting coffee has been so good for our nervous system. Coffee has a strong stimulating effect on our nervous system. Something we don't need 5-6 times a day (hard to be moderate :-). Other nerve-stimulating herbs are nicotine, mate, cocoa. We notice the most effect when we occasionally drink regular coffee. The body becomes shaky, agitated, nauseous. It is confirmation that for our bodies in particular, coffee is not the best option.
