St. John's Wort - are you ready to pick?

With the help of St. John's wort, you can make the most beautiful tinctures and ointments. The substance found in St. John's wort, hypericin, colors them deep red. It is also the substance (among others) that has made St. John's wort famous all over the world for its antidepressant effects. It can also be used to advantage as an ointment externally.

Unfortunately, the reputation has contributed to the fact that St. John's wort is endangered in some parts of the world. Here, in central Sweden, it is common and easy to find. But still be restrictive when picking. Don't take more than you need!

The true St. John's wort has similar relatives. What we have learned is that as long as the red dye is present, it is a St. John's wort with hypericin and therefore active. If you are unsure, take a flower bud or flower and rub it between your fingers. If it is correct, your fingers will turn reddish purple.

To make your own tincture, pick fresh St. John's wort and fill a sterilized glass jar. Fill with vodka (37 - 40% is fine). Let stand for at least two weeks in a dark room. Then strain and store in a dark place.

When you pick St. John's Wort, send a thought to the plant and thank it for all it will give you. You will enjoy it a lot during the dark months of winter!
