It can take time before you open your eyes to the simple. That's what happened to us at Örtfabriken with Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis). It took time before we understood that the herb is among the finest things you can take when you need relaxation. That's why we have included it in our Happy & Relaxed tincture together with the mainstay Frossörten. You take a tincture in the form of drops, internally. For those of you who want to use Lemon Balm in its pure form, we recommend our Miss Melissa tincture instead.
Lemon balm is easy to grow and spreads easily. What first confused us was its scent and character. Quite soft and supple. Citrusy and soft. Not at all as powerful as we think Lemon balm is in its character.
We were advised by an herbalist friend to take Lemon Balm in the morning. Hmm... herbs for the nervous system in the morning? If you are a bit sensitive, it can have too much of a sleepy effect. But with Lemon Balm, that is not the case at all. It is perfect for the morning! A beautifully fragrant Lemon Balm tea that sets the tone for the day. We like to drink it together with Mallow in the form of flowers and leaves. In this way, we create our own ritual and set the tone for the day.
How do you take Lemon Balm?
When we make a tea with Lemon Balm, we make an infusion. An infusion is good because we are dealing with fragile leaves and flowers. You simply let 1 teaspoon of Lemon Balm steep in 1 cup of boiling water. Don't forget to put a lid on it so that the essential oils don't evaporate. Let the infusion steep for 30 minutes. If you want a super infusion, let the herb steep overnight. Strain and enjoy! If we don't have time to make an infusion, we use tincture instead. These are herbs in concentrated, liquid form for internal use.
Tips for reading and podcasts about Lemon Balm
There are many limitations to what we can say about the herb and its effects. But we can refer to texts and podcasts that we love. The first tip we want to share about Lemon Balm is Rosalee de la Foret's episode about the herb .
If you would like to broaden your understanding and embrace the spiritual properties of Lemon Balm, we recommend Worts and Cunning . She describes the herb's physical and emotional effects, but also their spiritual aspects and magical abilities in an excellent way. Enjoy her site!
And then my absolute favorite, herbalist RJ Wheelan. His website is a real eye-opener and he offers so much valuable knowledge. Here he writes about Lemon Balm . He always ends his herbal descriptions by telling how he himself experiences the herb. I love it!
