For me, the best way to describe Hjärtstilla is like receiving a warm, motherly hug. The herb is actually called Motherwort in English. If you combine the English and Swedish names, you get a nice description of the herb's excellent qualities.
When I think of heart-calming, I think of a madame... Madame Motherwort. Perhaps that is what Culpeper describes, that it is the herb of Venus:
' Venus owns this herb and it is under Leo. There is no better herb to drive melancholy vapors from the heart, to strengthen it and make the mind cheerful, blithe and merry".
In esoteric circles, the Heart Spirit is associated with the heart. It is a heart plant. If you are interested in reading more about the energetic impact of herbs and a little more specifically about the Heart Spirit, we recommend Pam Montgomery's fantastic book Plant Spirit Healing .
Herbalists classify the heartwood as an herb for the nervous system (i.e. "nervine").
Sowing and reaping peace of mind
As a plant, the Heartwort is quite impressive. Large and stately in the herb garden. About a meter high. A little thorny and threatening, but at the same time beautiful and fragile with its bright flowers. It thrives very well in our latitudes, so grow it with joy.
Start by sowing indoors and then place the plant outside. The seeds may need to be kept cold for a month if they have not sprouted after a month.
You use flowers and leaves as herbs. In the summer you can enjoy fresh leaves and flowers. In the winter you use dried herbs instead.
Heart-calming dosage and as tea
If there is one herb that you should be careful with the dosage, it is Hjärtstilla. Usually a small dose is enough. If you usually take 20 drops of tincture of another herb, then 3-4 drops may be enough. Experiment! If you are using fresh leaves instead, take a leaf the size of a five-krona coin or smaller.
You make your infusion like this. Crumble the leaf into a cup and pour boiling water over it. Put a lid on to protect the essential oils and let it steep! And you've made your infusion, or your cup of tea with heartburn!
What is Hjärtstill good for?
We are limited in what we can write about herbs and their effects. However, we can refer you further, for example to this very good description of the heart still . It is always important to read up on an herb, to know more about it and any contraindications.
At Örtfabriken you will find Hjärstilla in the form of tincture:
