Throughout history, herbs and plants have been used for ceremonial smoking. Here are our suggestions for herbs that are suitable for smoking on special occasions. You may want to honor this moment, the memory of a person, or set an intention. Let the herbs guide you.
Here is a selection of herbs that we like and that you can use to make your own blend:
- Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris). Use this with caution and in small doses.
- Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) or Skullcap, as you see in the picture above. A wonderful herb that in English goes by the name nervine .
- Rose petals, what could be more beautiful than adding a few pink and red petals to your mixture? Rose is an astringent. Only use a small amount.
- Sage (Salvia officinalis) has been used throughout history for purification and protection.
- Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) is an herb widely used in the Baltic countries. Add a few petals of the blue flower to your mixture.
- Marigold (Calendula officinalis) or Marigold in English - to let in the sun's rays.
The selection of herbs is of course very large and we had to limit ourselves. We have chosen several flowers to smoke. Maybe you are wondering about lavender? Lavender is well suited to smoking as it is mild and does not irritate the throat.
The last time I made a blend to smoke was at a ceremony for gratitude.
Rolling your own ceremonial herbal cigarette can be a bit of a hassle. Crumble the herbs well and place them in an organic rolling paper. I usually don't use filters. Sometimes I don't even take a puff, but let the smoke fill my mouth so I can feel the aromas and essences. Sometimes I take a couple of puffs, but that's usually not more than that. For me, with my sensitivity, it often gives strong experiences, thanks to the proximity to the herbs.
The Herb Factory does not recommend smoking herbs on a recurring basis, but rather do so on well-chosen occasions where you want to honor a moment, a person, a place...
Just as the Public Health Agency writes, plants for smoking and herbal cigarettes can have negative effects on our health.
